Facade work usually starts with a symptom: damp on an inside wall, cracked render, a coping that has worked loose, or a stain spreading down the brickwork. We trace the cause first, because re-rendering a wall that is still letting water in only buys a few months. On one building in Stourton the job began as an investigation into water getting into an attic room. It finished with scaffold to three elevations, roof repairs, a new window, new fascias, soffits and downpipes, and the front and side elevations re-rendered in a thermally efficient product.

We work on older buildings as often as new ones. Royal House in Leeds is a four-storey Victorian former warehouse from 1881, in the old industrial quarter by the River Aire. We carried out its external masonry restoration while office tenants stayed in occupation on all four floors. Keeping a building running while the outside is repaired is the normal way we work, not a special arrangement.

A lot of this work is reactive. When a vehicle hit a boundary wall in Holbeck, we cordoned it off, isolated the wall lighting, took down what was left unstable and rebuilt it like for like in double-skin brick, using a brick match from a local merchant and new pier caps to match the rest of the wall. That one was approved through the building's insurance, which is a common route for impact damage and one we are used to working within.
